Metrasens and its product design partner Smallfry have been announced as the winners of "Industrial Product Design" at the Design Week Awards 2010 for the Ferroguard product range. Designed by Metrasens and Smallfry, two Midlands-based specialists, the unique metal detection system for MRI scanning suites is already saving money and saving lives across the UK and in the US. The central magnet in an MRI scanner has such a powerful attraction to ferrous metals, that it can hurl a porter’s trolley through a room, or rip a device from the body of a patient.

A global first, the new alert system was invented by Metrasens Ltd, a spin-out from the world's leading defence technology and security company, QinetiQ, and designed for market launch by Smallfry. Metrasens’ CEO, Dr Simon Goodyear, commented: "The dangers of using MRI scanners can be significantly reduced by using the Ferroguard system. The American College of Radiology is already recommending that all US MRI facilities have a warning system such as Ferroguard in each of their facilities. Smallfry brought a level of elegance and sophistication to our product that has received great reactions from our customers. Metrasens has won the inaugural Iaward for Cross application of technology. The award was presented at the British Science museum on Monday 16th November.

Launched by the Government to recognise and celebrate the best of British science, innovation and technology, the iawards are backed by Science and Innovation Minister Lord Drayson and leading businessman James Caan.

The Duke of York visited Metrasens Ltd at the Malvern Hills Science Park as part of his visit to the Malvern Hills Area.

Prince Andrew toured the Science Park and the leading defence and technology company QinetiQ before opening the multi-million pound sports complex at Malvern College.

As the UK’s special representative for international trade and investment, the Duke of York travels the world promoting British businesses.

Prince Andrew showed particular interest in Metrasens’ MRI safety product, Ferroguard.

The Princess Royal visited the Malvern Hills Science Park where she unveiled a plaque to officially open the phase three building and meet some of the firms located there.

The visit was hosted by Dr David Brown of Advantage West Midlands, which provided much of the funding for phase three.

Among the park’s tenants that Princess Anne visited were Metrasens Ltd who demonstrated their MRI safety metal detector, Ferroguard.
