deployment and modes of operation

The Ferroguard systems are designed to be operated in two different modes; Pre-screen and Entryway mode.

Entryway Operating Mode

In the Entryway mode the Ferroguard® MRI alarm system is located near to the entrance to the MRI suite and is designed to reduce the likelihood of a major ‘projectile effect’ incident for example if a member of staff inadvertently brings a large ferrous object into the MRI room. The Ferroguard poles are placed or mounted either side of the doorway and as such present no obstruction to entry into the MRI room. The sensitivity is lowest half way between the two sets of poles and due to the wide separation of the sensors in this mode the system is only designed to reduce the likelihood of a major ‘projectile effect’ incident. Ferroguard fitted wit a Beacon display can also be used to test new equipment or staff clothing for compatibility with the MRI scanner.

Pre-screen operating mode

In the Pre-screen mode the system poles are placed close enough together to allow just a single person to pass between them. The sensitivity control is set to a high sensitivity level and the system can then be used to scan patients for smaller ferromagnetic items. The system would typically be deployed in the interview or changing room area. It can be used to quickly scan the patients for small ferrous objects as well as common objects such as cell phones which they can then leave behind in the locker room prior to entering the MRI room. As well as reducing the likelihood of small projectile incidents, the system will also reduce the likelihood of an MRI scan having to be repeated e.g. due to the presence of an object distorting the MRI scan image. Ferroguard Pre-screen fitted wit a Beacon display can also be used to test new equipment or staff clothing for compatibility with the MRI scanner.

An ideal installation has the combination of a Ferroguard® System in Entryway mode located at the MRI entrance to stop major ferromagnetic objects being inadvertently taken into the MRI room combined with a system setup in Pre-screen mode to screen the patients individually for smaller objects prior to the MRI scan. The two stage approach maximises the safety whilst minimising annoying false alarms.
